Peles Castle is a Neo- Renaissance castle in the Carpathian mountains , near Sinaia , at 44 km from Brasov, on Prahova Valley . It was buil between 1873-1914 . By form and function , Peles is a palace , but it is consistenly called a castle. Its architectural style is a romantically inspired blend Neo- Renaissance and Gothic Revival , similar to Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bavaria. A Saxon influence can be observed in the interior courtyard facades , which have allegorical hand- painted murals and ornate fachwerk similar to that seen in northern Europe alpine architecture. Interior decoration is mostly Baroque influenced , with heavy carved woods and exquisite fabrics. It has 3,200 square-metre , with 170 roooms , many with dedicated themes from World cultures. Also, Peles Castle shelters a paiting collection of almost 2,000 pieces.
Almost adjacent to Peles Castle is Pelisor castle ( “Little Peles”) with 70 rooms feature a unique collection of turn-of- the century Viennese furniture and Tiffany and Lalique glassware.
The location for the Peles Castle was chosen by the prince Carol I de Hohenzollern, who was to become a King and it draws its name from the neighboring brooks which passes through the courtyard.
Peles castle was the first castle in Europe to have central heating and electricity. Its 160 rooms were used as a private retreat for leading and statesmen from around the globe as VS president Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Moamar Gaddafi, Yasser Arafat , etc.
